Design and Technology at The Redway School
At The Redway School, we aim for our Design and Technology Curriculum to be an inspiring and practical experience for our pupils. Using creativity and imagination, our pupils design, make and evaluate their products considering the needs of themselves and others. They gain a broad range of experiences whilst also consolidating knowledge taught in other associated subject areas such as Mathematics, Science, Computing and Art. Understanding design and technology education makes a vital contribution to the creativity, culture, and well-being of the nation.
Our curriculum is split into pre-formal, semi-formal and formal.
Pre-Formal: Within the pre-formal pathway, pupils will be exploring a wide range of materials and resources with similiar or different properties. Pupils will communicate likes and dislikes through multi-sensory experiences. They will also problem solve through trial and error and repetition as well as gain awareness and anticipation through cause and effect resources and activities.
Semi-Formal: Through the semi-formal pathway, pupils will communicate choices and prefrences in relation to designing, making and evaluating a simple product with support. They will investigate mechanisms and gain knowledge of using simple tools and equipment safely; this includes cooking and nutrition. They will gain technical knowledge.
Formal: During the formal pathway, pupils communicate thoughts and ideas and actively participate in research. They design, make and evaluate functional products taking into account design criteria. They gain knowledge and understanding of how to use tools safely and appropriately learn to critique, evaluate and test ideas,
