The Remote Education
The Strategic Leadership Team at The Redway School acknowledge the circumstances which result in school closure may affect families in a number of ways. In our planning and expectations, we aim to be as flexible as possible and would hope that this is followed through by our parents and carers. We recognise that for some, participating in ‘school work’ at home will be confusing, so you can work towards developing their independence discretely. When required, teachers make arrangements for lessons and tasks to be enjoyed at home via live online sessions, through pre-recorded videos, and personalised home learning resource packs.
Remote Teaching and Study Time
A pupil’s first day or two of being educated remotely might look different from our standard approach, while we take all necessary actions to prepare for a longer period of remote teaching.
Thereafter, pupils can expect a differentiated and individualised approach to meet need. Programmes will not only include educational work but also physio programmes, sensory integration work, and actives to support wellbeing.
The amount of study time will be personalised and this will be discussed with the class teacher during the initial phone call.
How will my child be taught remotely?
Example of remote education used at The Redway:
- Home learning packs; these are highly differentiated and can include sensory items, books, puzzles, for example
- Online sessions; class groups, small groups and 1:1
- Activities shared via online platforms; the school website and evidence for learning
- Videos; shared securely to either specific pupils or groups of pupils.
For remote learning to be successful in the home parents and carers should:
- Provide a space for learning to take place.
- Supervise online learning sessions.
- Ensure your child has access to the stationary resources provided by the school.
- Have IT devices charged and ready to use.
- Provide a daily routine.
- Praise your child for engaging with learning and celebrate completed work.
How staff will check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed of concerns:
- Staff will communicate regularly each week with parents and carers to assess levels of engagement.
- Staff will closely monitor our online learning programmes to check how often pupils are accessing the learning.
- Staff will make contact with parents and carers to discuss what engagement looks like for their child.
Engagement and Feedback
How will you assess my child’s work and progress?
- Verbal feedback from parents and carers via phone call.
- Parents and carers can upload pictures, videos and comments via evidence for learning (parent portal).
- Observations during online sessions with instant feedback
How, and how often, you will check pupils’ engagement with remote education?
- During phone conversations with parents and carers, staff will be able to discuss how engagement has been and be able to advise accordingly taking into account personal circumstances.
What happens if my child finds it difficult to engage.
- If your child finds it difficult to engage in ‘traditional’ school work then focus on life skills, independence and communication. For example, making a snack, undressing and dressing, and making choices over their immediate environment. If you would like to work on a particular area and need support then please discuss with your child’s class teacher.
Welfare
At The Redway, we recognise the importance of prioritising the wellbeing of all pupils. Therefore, activities to support physical wellbeing will be provided by our PE team, and where appropriate physio team, as well as ideas to support emotional wellbeing and regulation.
In addition to the education element, staff will carry out weekly welfare phonecalls or visits. From here, any additional support from school can be implemented e.g. change of provision available or a referral made to the relevant parties such as ‘Children’s with Disability Team’, ‘Complex Needs Nursing Teams’ or CAHMS, for example.
