Art and Design at The Redway School
Through our Art and Design curriculum, pupils develop an understanding of colour, texture, line and form exploring patterns and mark making. They develop their knowledge in the use of materials, tools and processes, to be able to communicate ideas, feelings, and meanings.
They will foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, crafts people and designers within the local and wider community. Through art and design pupils will explore art through time and place, acknowledging art and artists through history and the importance of art from other cultures. They will be able to express choices, and explore their creativity and imagination through visual, tactile and sensory art work.
Our curriculum is split into a pre-formal, semi-formal and formal pathways.
Pre-Formal: At the earliest stages we use a hands on approach to explore sensory experiences. Art and Design encourages this approach to learning and acknowledges that pupils will use the skills practised through Art and Design to enhance their learning across the curriculum. Pre-formal pupils will have the opportunity to respond to, explore and experience using different media and textures. They will be learning about how their own actions create an effect e.g. making marks in media and how different movements create different effects. At the later stages of this pathway, pupils will begin to explore the use of craft tools.
Semi-Formal: Pupils at this stage of learning are becoming active learners. They are encouraged to make active choices about their own work and show an interest in the tools, materials and processes. They will use their senses to investigate and communicate ideas with or without support. They will develop their ability to handle and manipulate tools for art, craft and design..
Formal: The formal curriculum builds upon the skills and understanding of the semi formal curriculum linking closely with the National curriculum. Students build upon their abilities to handle and manipulate tools and materials with greater independence. They are taught about specific techniques and explore works of artists in greater depth gaining inspiration for their own creative ideas.
