Careers guidance enables our students to be able to successfully manage transitions in learning, future placements and work related experiences and supported employment. For our students their pathway though life should provide opportunities that give a sense of purpose and raise aspirations, it should give them the skills to use their learning in their adult life.
For many students at the Redway school ‘career’ means something different to that of their mainstream peers. We consider career to mean ‘Your Pathway Through Life’ and all of the life opportunities and experiences this provides. For our students we believe the following elements are important in considering the impact of successful careers education information, advice and guidance. We use the Gatsby careers benchmarks to ensure quality of provision for pupils at The Redway School, our careers programme is based on the principles of:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each student
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employees and employers
- Experience of workplaces
- Encounters with further education
- Personal guidance

We consider career to mean ‘Pathway Through Life’ and all the life opportunities and experiences this provides. We place career guidance for pupils within its fullest context: a development of life and work skills, an understanding of options within the adult world, whether for some this is a work placement, a work-based training organisation, or extended education, and a voice over the kind of support that will best suit them in the next steps after school, regardless of whether this is a job role, daily placement or residential support and care.
We adopt a framework developed by the Career Development Institute and supported by the DfE. This framework underpins our ‘Pathway Through Life’ approach and promotes six learning areas: growing throughout life; exploring possibilities; managing career, creating opportunities; balancing life and work; and seeing the big picture. This learning is supplemented by our Life Skills teaching, providing a broad and rich offer in preparing our pupils for the future.
