RE at The Redway School
RE provides opportunities for children to learn through experiences, to explore the world first-hand using all their senses and to gain knowledge and understanding of the world in which they live. RE can enable students to communicate emotions, feelings and opinions and to progress through powerful experiences offering connections to the outside world.
RE can help pupils reflect on issues in their own lives and can be especially appropriate to support with struggles, bereavements or difficulty experiences: the sound of a bell, the smell of an incense, the taste of honey can all offer peace, calmness, reflection, and wellbeing.
The syllabus emphasis focuses on the three themes of belonging, beliefs, and behaving, and encourages tolerance and diversity.
Our Curriculum is split into pre-formal, semi-formal, and formal pathways.
Pre-Formal: RE connects with the lives of children offering colourful sensory experiences forming an integral part of engagement with the world around us. At this level of learning, pupils are using their senses alongside awe, wonder and fascination to understand their world. The statutory curriculum reflects this and allows pupils to share meaningful experiences and beliefs that they need to engage with RE at the semi-formal and formal level.
Semi-Formal: Pupils learn to identify special people and celebrations in relation to themselves and others and reflect on their experience to particate in simple RE responses. Pupils begin to gain some understanding of World Culture and will participate in the simpler responses to ethical and social situations.
Formal:. Pupils are encouraged to show increasing sensitivity, understanding and interest in World Culture and Faiths. Pupils are expected to have core knowledge and understanding of some religious stories, key belief and special people. Pupils should have some individual views concerning ethical and social situations making connections to their own lives and others.
