Job Profile:

Works under the supervision of the teacher. Accountabilities:
  • To meet and maintain all legal and school safeguarding requirements, ensuring that pupil safety remains paramount at all times.
  • Develops and uses knowledge and skills, e.g. literacy, numeracy to contribute to pupil learning.
  • Assists with the planning, preparation and development of learning programmes for groups / individuals.
  • Prepares resources to support a range of learning activities.
  • Works with small groups or individual pupils to enable learning.
  • Organises and maintains the learning environment and takes responsibility for aspects of class organisation, administration and display.
  • Supports the pupils in meeting the targets on their Individual Education Plan.
  • Monitor, evaluates and records pupil progress and reports this as directed.
  • Helps meet the physical needs of the pupils whilst encouraging independence.
  • Shares responsibility for the welfare and personal hygiene needs of the pupils / students, including feeding, changing and toileting as needed.
  • Assist with delivery of individual therapy programmes, liaising with the class teacher and the professionals concerned.
  • Provides support to the teacher by accompanying on offsite activities.
  • Works as part of a team to ensure that the wellbeing, behaviour and personal development of pupils enhances their learning opportunities and life skills.
  • Discusses with the teacher and contributes to the curriculum and classroom planning – informally and at meetings.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Understand and assists in interpretation of school policies.
  • Attending and contributing to regular planned staff meetings and contributing to professional development needs.

Competencies:

  • Good level of written and spoken English.
  • Numerate.
  • ICT skills.
  • Able to plan, prioritise and organise own work schedule.
  • Able to undertake administrative procedures to support the work of the teacher.
  • Able to clarify and explain instructions to pupils.
  • Able to communicate effectively with pupils and adults using appropriate means.
  • Able to work with pupils within the school behaviour management policy.
  • Able to assist with the organisation of the learning environment.
  • Able to prepare resources for teaching and learning activities and create displays.

Qualifications:

Specialist teaching Assistants will have a combination of experience, evidence of development and accreditation. Post holders will participate in school development activities and in service training in connection with the role. Appropriate qualifications include:
  • Teaching Assistant Qualification – NVQ level 3
  • City and Guilds 7231.
      • Assistants may hold one of these qualifications or are likely to be working towards an appropriate qualification.
